Life in a poly - a survival guide

Reality bites at poly. For good or bad, life there may not be what secondary school students expect. Like the girl who thought a diploma was a breeze - until she failed all her subjects. Another student worried that poly was a dog-eat-dog world - until she got there and started enjoying herself. Clearly, there's a gulf between poly myths and truths. So here, poly seniors come up with their own guide. Jane Ng & Yeo Ghim Lay report.

MIND YOUR EQ
Every subject at the polytechnic has major projects and they all need to be done as a team.
Your peers will be judging you. At Republic Polytechnic, students are asked to assess teammates' contribution, which goes towards the final grade. 'If you can't work well with people, your evaluation will be affected,' said first-year engineering student Nilofer Ashraff, 17.
Third-year business student Joyce Tooby from Singapore Polytechnic had to cajole her teammates to cooperate. Each of them thought he was doing more than the others. So she listed the tasks each was handling. 'When they could see that everyone was contributing, they were more willing to work,' she said.

BE A SHOWMAN
Just as projects are a staple in polytechnic life, presentations happen often. Students can find themselves standing in front of a lecture theatre filled with 100 of their peers.
The first few presentations, at least, can be terrifying, especially when it comes to the grilling sessions when students throw up questions.
First-year Singapore Polytechnic student Edison Ng recalls having to practise in front of the mirror and presenting to his parents to prepare.
'I like to talk, but when I had to present I got scared and felt the air-conditioner was very cold,' he said.
It took a whole semester before he got used to it. Now, the presentations he does every other week are a breeze.

DO YOUR RESEARCH
Polytechnic isn't a playground. Students from all five listed a string of deadlines they had to meet every other week. And answers are no longer found in the textbooks.
'Previously, you could rely on 10-year series to get you through. But in poly, you search for your own resources,' said first-year occupational therapy student Jasmine Ong, 21, of Nanyang Polytechnic.
'Work doesn't end when lessons are over, as we are expected to do our own research after that,' said Miss Ong, who has at least three major projects per semester and stays back late almost every day.

PICK AND CHOOSE
'Know what you want to do in life before you choose your course because this is just a stepping stone in your life,' said Singapore Polytechnic's Edison Ng.
Students emphasised the importance of selecting the right course, and not just doing what their friends are going for.
For those who have done so, knowing that they have made the right choice makes learning a joy.
'Unlike secondary school, I'm learning what I am interested in here because I chose my own course. It's a refreshing change from subjects being forced onto you,' said Mr Sean De Rozario, 19, a second-year aerospace technology student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

NO MORE UNIFORMS
A highlight for many polytechnic students is exchanging their secondary school uniforms for chic casual wear.
As Temasek Polytechnic third-year product engineering student Celeste Wong said: 'Going to poly is like attending a fashion parade. The students, especially from the business school, are well dressed.'
Business student Jonathan See, who has to wear a suit and tie to class twice a week for his course on persuasive communication, said learning to coordinate his clothes is part of polytechnic education.
'I wore a long-sleeved blue shirt with a gold tie the first week and my classmates said the colours clashed,' he said, but admitted that he enjoyed dressing up for class.

Cool. today i made history. i actually skip both law and econs lecture and i DID went to bsm lecture. HOW GREAT.

So spend the time in blk 46 doing those necessary stuff. yepp, manage to finish bsm ppt there, phew. meet wh and went atrium to look for mn's present. really got no idea what to buy. and oh ya! saw this braclet 2 days back, it cost $7.90. today i go check out again, its only $5.90!! hehheh, *evil laugh* shall go down on friday to see if it drop in price then i'll buy.. muhahaha..

Head back to blk 46 after that. WELL, was suppose to go home la, but just nice the time we leave is bsm lecture, so was thinking maybe we can tap card and go, but who knows yiling open the door and that lect saw her! suay man.. so was thinking maybe we stay awhile then go off, but he keep standing at the door way there, so irritating, how to run like that! so ya la, listen to him abit, watch a video and went off. still as BORING as ever. no wonder no one wanna go to his lecture..

Fight on pple, just 1 more months+ to paradise.. :)

Monday blues. yepp, went law lecture today. yes, on monday. rare ya? what was funny is that i came and viv nv came. haha. poa was kinda hard, but if practice more, i think i still can do it. went blk 46 to do law stuff. was damn tedious. sigh.

Wh called, so we head to town. we went to OG orchard point ONLY. yes, ONLY, no other place. look for our "old friends" there la. hahaha.. my god, celia slim down alot!! peiwen, if you are reading this.. i tell u what, u should go down and see her!! hmm... actually got a bit shock. haha..

Manage to bought a top at dorothy perkins, quite nice, cheap also. after that went walk walk around, and sat infront of Orchard point and observe crowds. hahaha.. sometimes its really fun looking at pple, the way they dress, how they walk and stuff. yepp, chat abit here and there also. and that stupid question. u noe what it is la ah hui.. Wah, was like chatting from the past to the future man. from last last time stuff, to marriage. cool. i love it.

On the way back home, the sky was damn nice. cloudless, and although the sun has already 3/4 sets, i can still see the colour differentiation. abit of redish orange mix with the blue. that really reminds me the last night when i'm in laos. that sunset was really nothing to say. missing it man! yepp..

These are just questions that cross my mind a few minutes ago. hmmm..

Today weather really sucks. it was soooo damn hot in the morning and around noon time. i swear i was sweating like hell. especially when i make my way back home. then suddenly it rains. wtf. somemore very heavily. hot cold hot cold, i'm not surprise if pple around me or rather myself getting flu.. But not bad la, at least it cools down the night.

Phew! 1 more project down. handed in our econs project today. yepp, today autocad lesson was suuper fast. hmmm..maybe around an hour? well its definitely a good thing coz we used up the rest of the time to finish up the project and print all those necessary stuff. was quite fun in there, luffing, eating, gossip and etc.

Yepp, i just left with law assignment! i just need to summarise 2 articles and i'm done with it! :)

Nothing much this 2 days, was just busy with those projects. i dont dare to say that i'm super busy with it coz most of the jobs are done by yiling, and i cant really help much. but was glad that i did contributed something today like making a BIG ang bao for our econs project cover. lol.. i'm still good at such stuff la, as for studies.. maybe i'll try abit harder next time. ha.

The whole world is rushing for projects, tons and tons of projects. sigh. well, i still got econs on hand which we will hand in tml, law assignment due next tue, and the web designing thingy due 2 weeks after. gosh. and then exams.

Well, other than projects and assignments, you guys must take good care of yourself ya? and please la, dont turn in so late!(refering to viviane, yiling and yanxiu.. haha..)

Yepp! this is a nice show! hmmm.. i would rate it 3.5/5. go catch it guys!
went to watch it with yiling at lot 1 after class. hahaha, skip bsm again, oh well well, cant be bothered. ha. wanted to watch "howled moving castle", but too bad there's not showing. anyway, i didnt regret watch this.

Got back my econs paper today. hmmmm, manage to get 87 which i'm quite happy abt it. at least i didnt fail! and yea, i really got full marks for the demand and supply question. hahaha.. yesterday got back poa, 67. hmmm, not bad la.. expected one. must understand leh, its P O A. i always sucks at this stupid module. lol.

Oh!! didnt i mention that this morning the np shutter bus that i took actually bang into the tail of a car? was like "WTF!! I"M ALREADY LATE!!" then that arse driver hurry get down from the bus and apologise to the owner and stuff. how do i noe? coz i'm like sitting at the last row.. muahhaa.. wh and will was in the bus too. all i can say is.. SUAY. its early in the morning for godsake!

as usual, went to pray first then went over to my ah ma house.
nothing much though, collect ang bao and catch up with some stuff.
totally boredom.
went out to watch movie after that.

Man, i'm like suppose to wake up at 930am today,
but i wake up at 1030am.
when i was abt to step out of the house,
then i remember tutorial starts at 11am. gosh!
so i called wh, telling her i'll be meeting her early,
and msg yx that i wont be going to sch for tutorial and the meeting.
i'm sorry guys, i dont mean it.

Went town to trim my eyebrown at far east.
went to lotsa salons and other specialised shops,
manage to found one finally. using brazilian wax.
my god, it hurts! its like "sssss!!" she tear off the wax from my eyebrown.
and at that very moment, tearss run down. lol.
same for wh, hahaa, cool.
she didnt the whole facial wax, which yea, hurts every more. muaha.

Head down to chinatown after that.
Had my henna done. yepp.
ohoh!! you guys was the 9pm show "my lucky charm"?
Well, i saw that charlotte. or rather, chocolate.
she's pretty! cute too.

Great day!! went ssbay in the morning to get ourself tanned. its being months i have step into sentosa. before that went cold storage to buy tanning oil and towel. because today is weekday, thats why the bus very empty, so shiok. reach there, not alot of pple though, settle ourselves down and start tanning. saw this disgusting gay, omg i tell u, he IS disgusting!! the way he walk, stand, and whatever la, arghhh!!! wearing this pink tight fit trunk somemore. puke.

Went off at around 1pm, with plenty of oil on our body. for me la, i was having difficulties washing up coz firstly, its oily. secondly, the water damn powerful, kinda pain. water therapy huh? lol. Head for lunch at harbourfront hawker centre and to town. shopping!! finally bought that sandals i want. yepp.

While walking to wisma, we saw alot of pple standing there looking at something. yuan lai shi pple filming there. wong lilin was there. she, hmmm, at first i thought she quite short, but she actually quite tall. she's can say quite pretty, just that make up is really thick. what to do, artiste ma. so me and wh stand there and watch. then from far wh spot her husband alan wu. hahaha, he muscular man!! look kinda shuai with the shades on but after take it out, look so so only. hahaha.. yep, was actually first time catching "live" of a filming process. think the job of those workers are really tough. they need to carry this and that, run here and there, or sometimes be in the show as those passengers and stuff. poor thing.

So ya, continue our shopping after standing there for like half an hour. wh manage to bought a shirt at topshop. after that we head to bugis area coz of the size of her shirt. wah, by that time i was really exhausted. at the end of the day, can feel that the skin is burning, eyes is tearing coz i keep yawning. muhahas. still thought that i can sleep in bus, but hai.. stupid bus with a stupid seats. argh.

Its offical over!! yay!! no more mugging like siao, its time for chinese new year!! hahas..

Today ieb paper was alright la, its a 50 mins paper, and i finished it in 10 mins. muhas. and the damn lectures, they actually make 2 different papers(but actually is the same), and place it alternately for us. really pain in the arse. so i got the green one, yiling behind me got the blue one. me and viviane got the same. okay, here comes the funny part. coz some pple got missing parts, so the lect went out to the other room to take some for them. and oh ya, the door open and i can still see yx standing there waiting. the paper had started already can!! my gosh. anyway, anne and 01 vivien got the same paper, and they were like asking each other answers while the lect was gone. but unfortunately, the lect saw them whispering and immediately minus one mark from them. was like "wtf?" the atmosphere was quite bad at that moment la. yepp, after the embarassment, everybody continue with the paper. ehhh, still can do la, but dun think will pass? like border line fail? yepp. i noe alot of pple had finished, but they just sit there and wait, like me. hahaha. till zach stand up and walk out, everybody start walking out. hahaha.. weird!!

Yah, was glad its finally over. phewww~ was suppose to go shopping with wh la, but got pangseh by her, so yah. promise qiwei to help him but something, so went jp alone after that. was shopping alone, bought a adidas shirt, i like!! after that went order the cake, and head to lot 1 to meet huishi up. catch up abit of stuff here and there, and 38-ing about everything. hahaha.. thats us. only WE can do that. lol.

I swear my room is hidden with lotsa bloody disgusting lizardsssss. and i just heard them. fark.

Burden GONE! i've waited for this hour for so long, the moment where i blog abt my econs paper is over! woohooOOO! hahahahaa, really, so relax now. the paper was easy, manage to do. hopefully i can score full marks for that demand and supply question. hehheh. but the mcq was kinda hard to me. yepp.

When for lunch after that, and chill at some table near blk 56. well, nobody bother to study for poa coz its open book, so was chatting away for 3 whole hours. hahaha.. poa paper was kinda okay to me, though i never balance. muahahaha.. but think still can pass la, hopefully.

Yepp, 4 down, 1 more to go. ieb!! sian, 50 mcq without book how to do?! later have to go flip through again..

Phew, was actually trying out econs past year papers and those tutorials which i'm suppose to do by tml just now. well, day 2 today. finish my bsm paper. hmmm, kinda easy to me, maybe coz i did my "homework". most of the questions came out somehow exactly the same as the past year papers. so yep, my hard works pays off. but still, dont think i wont get good grade, but also wont fail la.

After the paper, went back home and come out again. went studying at civil lib with yiling. saw wh there oso, alone. erm, kinda weird. anyway, manage to understand quite a lot of things here and there. was kind sleepy though. head down to causeway pt to chill, there changed alot, i haven been there for monthss. hahaha..

I realise actually econs really aint that hard like what yiling said. most of the questions i tried just now, i did manage to do. prayy that tml paper is easy, if not i'm screwed. oh ya, not forgetting i'm having poa tml also. brrr... luckily its open book, if not i'm so dead tonight, jaga-ing 2 modules. hahahaa..

Just 2 more days.. after tml i'm 3/4 happy.. :)
